Latincouver is a non-profit organization founded by Paola Murillo in 2009 as a space or “plaza” for Latin Americans in B.C. to connect and interact with Canadian people and businesses.

In its 11 years of existence, it has managed to become an example of the best Latin America has to offer to B.C.. Latincouver’s influence has been growing, creating local cultural events such as the Carnaval del Sol in Vancouver.

As a hub for Latin Americans to seek help, the organization has been put to the test with 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic.

Founder Paola Murillo said this has created a need to bring the community together.

“Through the last few years we have been doing this. But now, in the current situation, it made us act even faster.” – Paola Murillo, Latincouver Founder and Executive Director

The coronavirus outbreak has affected everyone around the world. Sickness, unemployment and even the loss of a loved one are just a few of the challenges people are facing with this health crisis.

After listening to the concerns of many members of the community, Murillo said the organization needed to step up.

“Some people have short needs right now. So, we were thinking ‘how can we organize ourselves as a community?’  […] We started thinking about what would be the best way to help our community with current needs.” – Paola Murillo, Latincouver Founder and Executive Director

What came as a result was the creation of a special Facebook group, called, ‘COVID-19 Latinos unidos en Vancouver y BC,’ meant to help Latins in B.C. stay connected and informed on the current situation.

According to Paola Acero, marketing manager for Latincouver, it will all be in the best interest of the community.
