Wauters wants to dismantle Canada’s Indian Act, which gives the Government of Canada broad powers to define indigenous status.
Wauters believes Canada’s indigenous peoples should have “make-or-break” decision-power when it comes to infrastructure projects—like the proposed expansion of the Transmountain Pipeline—spanning their sovereign territory.
That said, the candidate expressed this mostly in environmental terms, stressing the federal government needs to coordinate with indigenous peoples in B.C., opposed to TMX expansion. Wauters further stresses that Canada’s First Nations, Inuit, and Métis need to be involved in developing a workable climate-action policy.
