A B.C. teen’s online petition to have the NBA change it’s logo to feature Kobe Bryant has gone viral, collecting over 2 million signatures and counting.

According to change.org, several celebrities including Justin Bieber, Usher, and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine have signed the petition.

16-year-old Nikyar Moghtader started the petition after he heard of the devastating news of a helicopter crash that claimed Bryant’s and eight other’s lives.

Moghtader explained it’s time the NBA made the switch because of the legacy Bryant left like no other.

“He was a role model and hero both on and off the court, donating to countless charitable organizations, expanding the NBA internationally, and being one of the greatest to set foot on the hardwood.” – Nikyar Moghtader

Initially, Moghtader was only hoping to collect 100 signatures. So imagine his surprise when he reached 2 million.

“It was overwhelmingly amazing to see the great NBA and Kobe Bryant fanbase be just as passionate as I was about my petition.”
– Nikyar Moghtader

The teen from Vancouver credits the popularity of the NBA, and passion of other Kobe fans out there for helping his petition reach its current point.

“Without the help of the NBA community and fanbase it wouldn’t have been possible to get the petition to the point it has gotten to.”
– Nikyar Moghtader

Signatures flow in fast for Moghtader’s petition, urging the NBA to change it’s logo to feature Kobe Bryant.

The current NBA logo depicts a silhouette of retired Lakers star, Jerry West, and has been the logo since 1969.

Moghtader unfortunately never got to see Bryant play in person, but he still followed Kobe’s career closely. He, like many basketball fans, even called out Kobe’s name every time he shot a basket”.

“Because I wasn’t born in the Jordan era I grew up watching Kobe Bryant and his play style and attitude made him my favourite player ever. He was a role model and a hero to me.” – Nikyar Moghtader

The current NBA logo features another retired Lakers star, Jerry West.

Bryant retired in 2016 after a twenty-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He succumbed to the crash on Sunday after the helicopter carrying the former basketball star crashed into a hillside.

Low visibility has been listed as a key factor for the accident.
