The BC Lions have added Grey Cup experience to their coaching staff, hiring Rick Campbell as the team’s newest head coach.

The Lions vowed to make major changes after a 5-13 record which saw the team miss the playoffs, despite adding 2017 Most Outstanding Player Mike Reilly.

Campbell comes with an abundance of CFL coaching experience. He spent the previous six seasons as the head coach of the Ottawa RedBlacks. During his tenure in Ottawa, the RedBlacks reached the Grey Cup three times and captured the 2016 championship.

BC Lions Content Producer, Matt Baker says hiring an experienced coach was part of Lions GM Ed Hervey’s bucket list.

“Campbell started from scratch in Ottawa. Their record was 2-16 in their inaugural season and two years later they won the Grey Cup. This is a guy that is experienced and has won.” – Matt Baker, BC Lions Content Producer

The Lions posted their worst record in 23 years in 2019, GM Ed Hervey is expected to make wholesale changed for the up and coming 2020 season.

In a press conference Monday, Campbell was announced as the teams newest coach. Campbell said he likes the core of the Lions and thinks they can make some noise moving forward.

“This is a roster brimming with talent and a of ton untapped potential, and I can’t wait to get started with Ed on building a champion for fans of the Lions.” – BC Lions Coach, Rick Campbell

The Lions dismissed former coach DeVone Claybrooks after a poor 2019 season. Baker said there’s always an element of risk when hiring a rookie coach like Claybrooks opposed to an experienced one like Campbell.

Baker adds the Lions are expected to make more announcements to their coaching staff in the coming days.

Hervey said the team will shift their focus to CFL free agency and to expect new additions after the Lions worst season in 23 years.
