Google honoured the late Canadian track runner Harry Jerome on their home page. Today Jerome would’ve been 79 years old. Jerome was a decorated Canadian track athlete through the 1960’s, and is still making an impact on Canadian athletics.

In Vancouver there is a non-profit organiztion under his name called the Jerome Outreach Society, with the purpose of hiring track coaches to coach at lower income schools in Vancouver.

Vancouver Foundation is another non-profit organization that works with the BC Athletics Organization to offer track athletes the Harry Jerome Scholarship.

Vancouver Foundation Donor Services manager and BCIT alumni Kerri Kirincic said it’s more than just a scholarship.

“The Harry Jerome scholarship fund not only honours Harry Jerome, but it also to hep foster future Harry Jerome’s.” – Kerri Kirincic, Vancouver Foundations Donor Services Manager

In the lower mainland, only SFU and UBC offer track and field programs. High school track and field athletes don’t always have the proper resources to pursue their athletic career.

Chris Winter, technical manager of track and field for the BC Athletics Organization says, “The legacy that he has is incredible, and we are fortunate to have that scholarship in his name. It helps athletes stay in the sport.”

Over the past three years the BC Athletics Organization has awarded an average of three to five track and field athletes the Harry Jerome Scholarship. The BC Athletics Organization also helps students get recruited by hosting University recruitment nights, and works with coaches to encourage track athletes to stay in the sport.

Harry Jerome passed away in in December 1982,  he was only 42 years old at the time.

But his legacy still lives on in Canadian and BC culture. He is honoured in both the BC and Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. He also created a scholarship under his name in 1963, and has been funding track athletes for 55 years.
