For The Record – Canadian sport charities under fire

Graham Cox – November 5, 2018

On today’s For The Record, my guest is Kate Bahen, Managing Director at Charity Intelligence Canada.

A recently updated report from Bahen’s company outlined that the charities associated with professional sports teams are lacking financial transparency.

These charities amass millions of dollars through corporate sponsors and 50/50 draws, yet according, to the report, most are not being accountable to their donors.

“It’s been overwhelming. Such a huge reaction across Canada about people just commenting, calling up the charities and asking them to please be financially transparent.”

In the interview we dive into what the response has been from teams, why might financial statements be so difficult to get from certain organizations, and what Bahen recommends to fans thinking of donating.
